In the sporting world few things dominate Saturdays quite like college football. I feel absolutely no guilt when I sit on my couch from noon to midnight watching football. Day well spent in my opinion. But I can guarantee you had no clue there was a hockey game on today. Lost in the haze of college game day is the fact that the Canucks and Kings are writing another chapter in the book that is their rivalry. Well, a bunch of AHL and ex NCAA kids wearing theirs jerseys are.
Gary Bettman may be as interesting as a deflated tire but my god is he making a statement. Gary is the definition of the “ordinary” guy. Not particularly tall, weird sounding voice, and husky build. But he’s doing what few commissioners would be willing to do. Walk across the bar stare down college football and put an organized game smack dab in the middle of the Goliath.
The NHL has never been afraid to put itself behind the 8 ball. The souring of contract negotiations with ESPN, losing out on their deal with HBO sports to broadcast 24/7, and finally putting Tony Luftman and Brian Lawton on air almost every day. Crippling moves all around. So when the US viewership declined in 2016-17 Gary must have felt the pressure and took a direct shot at the big boys.
Is this simply a sign that Gary isn’t a big football guy? Maybe.
Will the games ratings suffer terribly due to the timing of the game? Not if you don’t let it happen.
Perhaps he had his admin schedule the game. Possibly.
I believe he has a vendetta and the squirrely bastard just attempted the knock out blow. Will it land? Only time will tell. But if Gary needs the casual viewer in his militia than by god I am off college football starting at 5!
Hey you! Its time to be a part of something much larger than yourself.
God bless you Mr. Bettman and with the lord as my witness I will see this movement through!
